The Deck of Professions

The Deck of Professions is a new type of usable art for a new America. Dominican-born Hampton Rodriguez created this series of 52 compelling images, brought together as an actual deck of cards that to be used in language & culture learning spaces throughout Greater Portland.

Selected images will be on display in the Portland Mercado Market Hall during the month of August. Hampton Rodriguez and Patrik McDade, Founder and Program Director of People-Places-Things will be in attendance at the opening to answer questions about the creation of the images and the use of the deck to practice English and demonstrate the full diversity of US culture.

Language learning materials are typically text heavy and do not reflect the lived experiences or the aspirations of language learners, particularly adults. These vibrant images engage learners, reflect our communities at work, and inspire us to become more. Portland has the 12th highest per capita population of immigrants and refugees. 225,000 Oregonians don't speak English very well. Community education can be community building as well if we focus on each other instead of getting the right answer. We Are The Subject of The Sentence.

Hundreds of grammar books, picture dictionaries and traditional language learning materials will be given away.
